Sustainable development, technology and our lives

It bothers me. In a good way - because it matters - sustainability in the way our civilization grows and develops, a factor once disregarded, but important, even crucial and on the focus buzz right now. And here comes the connection between technology and development. Technology is, above and before all, the process of thinking, the flow of ideas, the make-up of perceptions and needs. Look back in time - the need of food and the thought process came up with bows and arrows, traps, fire-making etc. This is technology in action. Look back, but closer - here came combustion engines, steam trains, coal...more coal, some oil later, some more oil and oil derivatives...The correlation is clear - technological progress follows the thought that creates it, that follows and comes from the need and necessity. This is how it works.

Now that there is raising awareness that we must change the model. This is the though process. More and more people are realizing it, and more and more of them are placing it in action. This is how technology is being born, again, but this time it's purified. It's purified by the thought, that is becoming clearer that what we do must be in harmony with our little, beautiful and fragile world.

The more we are aware of the many, if not every bit of consequences, the better our thought will create new technologies to fit our needs with lesser harmful and wasteful impacts. The finer our thought goes the cleaner our future will be. This is evolutionary process, plus we have the dangers pushing us ahead. Not the best of all circumstances, but that's where we are standing now !

Let's stop digging and drilling the earth, and let the cleaner, nicer, more functional, human and environment friendly technology come in!

I think that new sustainably technology might well be more able to provide people with material wealth, than the old not so sustainable one's.

I think it is not so clear if technology springs out of our thinking, or if our thinking is "created" by the technology we use. If I look around at the gadgets I use i daily life, mobile phones, computers etc. i don't remember that anyone saw the need for them before they existed. The same with cars, I can imagine, or bread... people were fine witheating porridge until someone invented the bread. Then they started demanding, bread, bakeries, bakers etc. , adapting their thinking and life style o a new technology.

On the other hand one could find instances of thinking preceeding technology. It is pretty much the question of wether the chicken or the egg came first

Yes, Peter, this is not wrong at all, it must be achieved for everyone, but not at the price of sacrificing the future. And the way of thinking is the leading part - I'm not judging technology, but I'm hoping the leading minds will have sustainability as their founding idea. And this is happening, already, slowly.

A thought provoking blog! Many people of course live a sustainable life style - have done so for generations. But today they want more. They want the fruits of technology just like us. They want to fly, they want to have a car, they want to have a warm house that lights up when you press a switch. And who can say they are wrong to want such things? Especially when such things come with healthcare, sanitation, freedom from hunger, human rights in their wake?
