About DDT and our community

The last days I have been writing furiously. Not for my own blog, but in the comments on Bart Knols review of the book The excellent powder. The powder is DDT - probably the world's most hated pesticide, but also the only one that anyone woud call "excellent" in public. The discussion was sometimes harsh - and it reminded me a good deal about the endless Th!nk 2 debates about human responsibility…See More

Looking at the Swedish formerly state owned energy company Vattenfall's homepage one might think that we're dealing with a company as climate friendly as Samsö. Sweden creates stricter rules for ecological food

Sweden will make the rules for what can be branded "KRAV" (the national branding or ecological food in Sweden, Presseurop reports. "Swedish organic farmers will have to satisfy ultra-stringent requirements to earn the organic label as of 2012. The checklist includes chemicals-free farming, green-fuel tractors, reduced nitrogen emissions in fertilizer spreading, and a steep cut in per… Continue

Urban gardening

I love seeing this. I see it everytime I walk out of my door and it always puts me in a positive mood, thinking about ways to live responsibly

The only time I have seen this before - small scale farming next to a block of flats, was in Tiraspol, Transnistria. BBC reports that also the Cubans have made an art out of urban farming. The reasons behind might differ -…

Hi! :) I hope we are somehow different... everyone is I guess. Mankell is a great writer, e has actually written quite some nice books about Africa, except for the best-seller detective stories.

What is this confendimeter? Does it measure what confidence people have in companies, rather than how green they are? I mean, there are several surveys and markings trying to assess how green they are. Is there somehow I can look at the French one? It sounds very interesting :)

Greetings

Republic of Moldova and Romania are similar but the languages are a bit different. Moldavians have their own dialect, even Romanians from different parts of the country speak differently. But once you know the language, you understand the people regardless of the zone they live in.

Did it take long to learn Romanian? I'm trying to learn Swedish, too :)

The Romanian name is Cristina, but the novel's name is as you spelled it. The fantasy stories are all of similar or less length than "Domnisoara Christina" If you have the time, read others, too.

Maitreyi is now part of the Romanian literature syllabus in high-school and it's considered really important for the exotic novel species.

Hee, hee, I hope you ate "sarmale" at someone's home and not in a restaurant. I hear they're better at home, done the traditional way, in a pot made of burnt clay with lots of cream when served. I don't like them, but my brother is a connoisseur. :))

What is EVS?

Hee hee, this is great, the "ce anume?" especially :) I didn't know you knew Romanian ... do you? It's not an easy language.

Speaking of why I love Scandinavia (although I have never been to any of the countries yet)... here's a couple of reasons:
- cold and snow that you have much more than we do
- the straightforwardness of people (if you don't like something, you say it, you're not polite just for the sake of being polite) - i noticed this in The Local's forums
- the music - Opeth in Sweden, the old Nightwish or HIM in Finland, even Norwegian black metal doesn't sound that bad (well, it does, but I don't understand it yet):)
- the furniture (you've invented IKEA concept, for God's sake)
- the design - FI & North Kingdom are the best agencies in the world
- Volvo cars, Nokia phones
- Eva Solo
- Hans Christian Andersen and his Little Match Girl ...
- the minimalism - did you also invent this? I heart uncluttered, clean, white spaces
- um, oh, H&M (btw, did you know that many Americans think that it's an US brand?)
- and you were lucky enough to get the Northern Lights, too :)
- the Swedish "lagom" (sorry if it's spelled wrong)

I know there's a mix of Danish, Swedish, Norwegian + Finnish stuff I mentioned above but hey, I'm just a foreigner that's been (or will be) a Scandinavian in another life. :D

Mircea Eliade is amazing. So amazing that a country still thinking like and living in the Middle Ages refused to be tolerant enough to accept him. If you haven't already, read his fantasy novels. Btw, what have you read so far?

P.S. I replied here, as the discussion would have gone way off-topic in the group.
